The New York Aquarium sits on a 14-acre site at the Boardwalk in Coney Island, Brooklyn, and exhibits over 250 species of marine life. The exterior includes a 1,100 foot “shimmer wall” consisting of more than 33,000 aluminum “flappers” that move with the wind and emulate fish scales. Amazingly this aquarium holds a tank with more than 500,000 gallons of water for the sea turtles, rays and sharks.

Manhattan Land Surveying & Engineering provided horizontal and vertical control, structure layout, site layout and as-built surveys. The field crews also determined the property lines and staked them out so that walls and fences could be erected, and established the location and placement of precast concrete railings around the new structures.

Improvements included the $156 million “Ocean Wonders: Sharks! Exhibit, featuring over 45 sharks as well as a 60-foot-high view of the beach and boardwalk, and 57,000 Square feet of space including an underwater tunnel and a rooftop observation deck.
